Today I wanted to walk through the process of migrating an existing site that’s hosted on G’s blogspot (blogger). So, I set-up a quick little test site, and started tinkering. It’s not terribly complicated…nor did I expect it to be…but, I’m just somebody who likes to take tiny trial runs…because, it’s those trials that will make evident any problems that you may encounter along the way.

So, the first step is to go into your Blogger settings and export blog. They explain that this is what’s going on:

Export your blog into the Blogger Atom export format.

So, you end up with an xml file on your drive. The WP gui has changed pretty significantly lately with 2.7…but, in your Admin you will see a Tools section. Beneath that there is an Import option. Select that. You’ll see this:

If you have posts or comments in another system, WordPress can import those into this blog. To get started, choose a system to import from below:

In the case of Blogger it will:

Import posts, comments, and users from a Blogger blog.

There may be a problem with images. I’ll have to take a look at that. Anyway, when you select the Blogger link, you’ll see this:

Howdy! This importer allows you to import posts and comments from your Blogger account into your WordPress blog.

To use this importer, you must have a Google account and an upgraded (New, was Beta) blog hosted on blogspot.com or a custom domain (not FTP).

The first thing you need to do is tell Blogger to let WordPress access your account. You will be sent back here after providing authorization.

Making DokuWiki Wysiwyg

Now, I’m not married to the DokuWiki platform. I’m surveying all the (at least somewhat) mature platforms out there… it’s just that DokuWiki does measure up pretty well. It’s a pretty mature software, and there is a decent group of people who are committed to its development. That’s one of the things, of course, that we like to see.

The forum could be more active…but I have gotten a few answers there. Anyway, at this point, we’re still evaluating everything out there to find the right tool for the job. Anyway…I think the coding seems to be pretty solid.

WikiWig Test

Ran through the upload and configuration of a WikiWig installation. The wysiwyg part is pretty nice. The image uploading got janky, and I need to look at the code a bit more. The support for the software seems minimal.

WikiSpaces Test Run (WetPaint test run too)

In my recent wiki engine comparison-shopping spree, I stopped in at WikiSpaces tonight and set-up a… you guessed it! Mainly I wanted to see first-hand the WYSIWYG functionality it offered so I can recreate it in the platform I settle on. I’ll give the WikiSpaces gang some credit: they did create a very user-friendly interface.

It seems if you want to host a WikiSpace on your own domain you have to pull out your wallet to the tune of $1000 a year. Depending on what you’re doing with it, it could definitely be worth it. All depends on how much money it’s making you ultimately. Apparently the first 30 days are free. That’s a good thing. I wouldn’t purchase something like that without a trial. They call it Private Label. I’ll have to give this service a test run later and see what I think.

This is an example of how to complete the task of adding an event to a calendar. In this post you can put the details of the event. When the user clicks on the calendar event, it takes her to a page such as this which provides further information.

Wiki Wysiwyg

It only makes sense that a Wiki offers wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) functionality. After all, the average user may not want to get up-to-speed on wikitext.

So, I started a wiki section on this topic. There’s a lot of confusing info out there and wysiwyg wikis. I hope to sort through some of that.

MediaWiki Testing Begins

The past few days I’ve done some fairly thorough testing of the DokuWiki software; and, I even set-up a wiki about learning how to wiki on the DokuWiki platform. Check it out; it’s cool.

That’s a great way to learn a software: read the documentation and put up a site testing all the options.

Today I’m going to put up a test site on the MediaWiki platform. All research suggests that MediaWiki and DokuWiki are the two CMS platforms to choose from. So, I’ll try them both.

Okay, I started testing on the MediaWiki platform. Go ahead and take a peek; you can read my initial thoughts about the software on the front page. I just put it up a few hours ago.

WP Magazine Theme

I like this one, and, once again it’s a way to push and twist WP into a really cool CMS. WP is a cool CMS no matter what…but, this allows a way to give WP a very non-WP sort of look…you know what I mean! : )
